DIDI HIRSCH MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES RECEIVES GRANT FOR NEW GLENDALE WELLNESS CENTER

Community Foundation of the Verdugos Supports Mental Health and Homeless Reduction Efforts

CULVER CITY, CA  May 22, 2014 – Community Foundation of the Verdugos will be presenting Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services with a $10,000 check TODAY at 3 PM to partially furnish and equip Didi Hirsch Glendale’s Wellness Center. The presentation will take place at Didi Hirsch Glendale—an outpatient community clinic—located at 1540 E. Colorado Street in Glendale.

Scheduled for completion in November 2014, the Wellness Center will include a kitchen, a shower, a computer lab and group meeting spaces to help low-income and homeless residents affected by mental illness achieve housing, employment, and better health for successful independent living.

“A diagnosis of mental illness isn’t the end of the road, but just part of the journey,” says Didi Hirsch President/CEO Kita S. Curry, Ph.D.  “Whatever your personal and professional goals, you can rely on our Wellness Center’s resources and caring peers.”

The Wellness Center is the principal project in the $1.56 million Glendale Center renovation, which began in December 2013. The renovation will also add medical treatment offices to meet increased demand for services and will make structural changes for earthquake safety and full ADA-accessibility.

“I’m delighted that Didi Hirsch got the Community Foundation’s vote of confidence—they sure have mine,” says Glendale City Councilmember Laura Friedman, who supported the proposal.

“During my term as Mayor Didi Hirsch joined us in Glendale to keep the decades-old clinic on Colorado Street open. Thanks to its expertise, children with behavioral challenges succeed in school, women traumatized by violence move forward with their lives, homeless people find stability, and seniors get what they need to thrive.”

The Community Foundation of the Verdugos, a publicly supported charitable endowment with approximately $12 million in assets, makes grants from the earnings of its invested contributions to local nonprofit organizations in the greater Verdugo area.
